During WWII, the cross on top of the golden copula was taken by the Nazis to Germany, there is a replacement up there right now, and the original was requested to be returned by Putin and it was found and sent back to Russia this year, right now it's inside the church. They're going to put it back up in 2009 for the celebration of Novgorod's 1,000 and something annerversity.
